A Year of Quotable Moments in Books [2017]

I know it’s already but February but I wanted to continue with the theme of wrapping up 2017. I wanted to share some great quotes from the books I read last year. There’s nothing like an awesome quote that is relatable, funny, ominous or one that is rather poetic. Here are a few.

Girl power…

― Robert Jordan, The Shadow Rising

“True art was more than beauty; it was more than technique. It was not just imitation. It was boldness, it was contrast, it was subtlety.”

-Brandon Sanderson, The Emperor’s Soul

“This world is unforgiving and cruel to those it judges as even the slightest bit outside the norm.”

– Seanan McGuire, Every Heart a Doorway

Introspection…

“I wondered how many people there were in the world who suffered, and continued to suffer, because they could not break out from their own web of shyness and reserve, and in their blindness and folly built up a great distorted wall in front of them that hid the truth.”

-Daphne Du Maurier, Rebecca

“It was impossible to expect a moral awakening from humankind itself, just like it was impossible to expect humans to lift off the earth by pulling up on their own hair. To achieve moral awakening required a force outside the human race.”

-Cixin Liu, The Three Body Problem

“No, I’m telling this wrong. After all, a person is herself and others. Relationships chisel the final shape of one’s being. I am me and you.”

-N.K. Jemisin, The Obelisk Gate

Prophecies and foretellings…

IMG_0008“And his paths shall be many, and who shall know his name, for he shall be born among us many times, in many guises, as he has been and ever will be, time without end. His coming shall be like the sharp edge of the plow, turning our lives in furrows form out of the places where we lie in our silence. The breaker of binds; the forger of chains. The maker of futures; the unshaper of destiny.”

― Robert Jordan, The Dragon Reborn

Thus is our treaty written; thus is agreement made. Thought is the arrow of time; memory never fades. What was asked is given; the price is paid.

― Robert Jordan, Lord of Chaos

“There can be no health in us, nor any good thing grow, for the land is one with the Dragon Reborn and he one with the land. Soul of fire, heart of stone, in pride he conquers, forcing the proud to yield. He calls upon the mountains to kneel, and the seas to give way, and the very skies to bow. Pray that the heart of stone remembers tears, and the soul of fire, love.”   -Robert Jordan, A Crown of Swords

Stonelore…

fifth2“Tell them they can be great someday, like us. Tell them they belong among us, no matter how we treat them. Tell them they must earn the respect which everyone else receives by default. Tell them there is a standard for acceptance; that standard is simply perfection. Kill those who scoff at those contradictions, and tell the rest that the dead deserved annihilation for their weakness and doubt. Then they’ll break themselves trying for what they’ll never achieve.”

-N.K. Jemisin, The Fifth Season

  1. Hello!
I finished reading Rebecca this month and loved it so much. Although this book was always on the back of my mind, it wasn’t until I read your review that I decided to read this book. Thank you!! 🙂 I like the quote that you shared!
