“Nobody ever thinks of himself as a villain, does he? Even monsters hold high opinions of themselves.”
Nebula and Hugo Award nominee for best novella
I didn’t really know much about this one. Was surprised to see another novella based on Lovecraft’s work (the Dream Quest of Vellitt Boe being one also nominated for a Nebula Award; hopefully will read soon).
Charles Thomas Tester is a hustler living in Harlem during the 1920′s looking for ways to earn money to support his aging father and himself. One job leads Tester to a mysterious man with connections to a being that the man says will come and remake the world and basically destroy humankind.
This one was good. Set during the 1920′s, it features a lot of racial discrimination. This sets helps set up the precarious circumstances Tester finds himself in and after one injustice too many, pushes him to do something he never thought would do. Great story.

Has anyone read it or plan to? Any thoughts on it?
