My Cousin Rachel by Daphne Du Maurier [Review]- Spoilers

“I wondered how it could be that two people who had loved could yet have such a misconception of each other and, with a common grief, grow far apart. There must be something in the nature of love between a man and a woman that drove them to torment and suspicion.”

Read: March 2017

*Spoilers ahead*

So awhile back I saw the first trailer for My Cousin Rachel with Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin and fell in love with it. Rachel Weisz looks mesmerizing. However, there was a huge gap for me, having never heard of this book. Besides inferring that two cousins fall for each other, I did not know what this book was about. So in anticipation of the movie, I decided to read My Cousin Rachel aka. My gold digging cousin killed our other cousin.

tumblr_inline_op6yyc6UHz1ujzvw9_540I know some might say she definitely killed him…that two faced gold digger! But for me the question was, did she act alone, did she act willingly with that creep  Rainaldi or was he coercing her in some way? For me that might be left to interpretation. Both Ambrose and Phillip seemed to think that Rainaldi had great influence over. He might’ve been in love her too so would he put up with Ambrose and later Phillip taking her away? Her death at the end I did not see coming until that moment when she went outside and no one warned her about the construction or something that was going outside that was a risk hazard. Still, if she was coerced or not, she was a master manipulator in my eyes making both men disregard everything and fall for her.

I think there got to a point where a lot of the book was mainly building up the relationship between Rachel and Phillip and not a lot of time was spent on the mystery of Ambrose’s death. It was ok but got to be tiresome at one point. A lot of building up with little pay off in the end. Still, it was nice read. Mainly looking forward to the movie.

I’ve seen a lot of reviews saying that Rebecca is better. Anyone feel the same?

  1. I have not read the book and found the film slow, but deliciously so. The tension between Weisz and Claflin is palpable and the filming is superb. I happily gave it four out of five stars.
